Sorry, not meant silly: which version is the best for Sierra?

I'm using VLC since long because of its simplicity and versatility. I always thought that the 3.0.x versions are more advanced and get more new features than the VLC 2.2.x versions, so I always loaded from time to time the latest 3.0.x nightly.

Now I recognize, that the 3.x branch was last updated on Dec 4 (I'm speaking about http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/mac ... 46-git.dmg), while the 2.x branch was updated daily until today.

Does the 2.x branch get more developer scrutiny than the 3.x branch?

3.x is the current developement version which might be still unstable. There is no release of VLC 3.0 yet.

VLC 2.2.4 is the current stable version, with 2.2.5 coming soon with some small fixes for Sierra.
So if you want to use the official stable version, this branch is the right one for you.

last news: there is a freshly updated vlc-3.0.0 2017 01 06 0336-git.dmg

It should be noted that 3.0.0 is able to correctly display soft-subtitles
whereas 2.2.5 still can't show them but in almost invisble characters.
