Subtitles Added to Videos in VLC Don't Work

Postby Evan1080 » 11 May 2016 17:46

Hello everyone,

I will add a video file, in advanced open file, and add an additional subtitle file to go with the movie and the subtitle file will not play. It used to be that I could add subtitle files and they work work perfectly; however that is no longer the case. I have tried adding subtitles through advanced open file and having the video file already open and clicking the subtitle tab and this doesn't work as well. I looked on the web to find that sometimes the media file and subtitle file may need to share the same initial name i.e, "TheRevenant.mkv" and "TheRevanent.srt" respectively, and should be in the same folder as VLC will automatically play the subtitle file? I haven't found this to be the case and I am at a loss as to what to do. The subtitles I am using aren't corrupt and should work. Please help!

It should work. Does 2.2.3 change anything and does the message log window indicate any errors? It could be that the srt file is not properly formatted. Have you tried with other movies and subtitles?

II still got this problem on VLC 2.2.4
here an example:

Also there is no more nightly of vlc 3.0 (that does not got that problem).

the last working version is VLC 2.2.1
vlc 2.2.2 and 2.2.3 don't work.

I have just tried myself with 2.2.4 and I see no issues, trying with the subtitle file your provided and both a MPEG 4 file and an MKV file (they were generated using Handbrake, from another source). I am running MacOS X 10.11.5 on MacBook Air.

Please try the following:
- Try with a video of a different format and see if that changes anything?
- See if the message log indicates any errors or warnings and let us know what appears
- Clear the preferences and see if that changes anything ('reset all' in preferences)?

Subtitles work now, problem fixed! I have ideas on how to improve the software, where should I post those on this website? Just general features to make the VLC experience better...

What change made them work?

I believe it was the new software update. I hadn't changed anything that should have affected the subtitles at all in preferences and I don't recall ever changing settings ever, in preferences. I would conclude that it was the 2.2.4 update.

I tried everything... in the nightly 3.0 the subtitles work like in version 2.2.1.
but on version 2.2.2 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 I really don't understand why they do not work (i think it is a font problem because there are some few lines that are ok... but the main lines are not).
I cannot open the log (I tried but nothing appear on the screen VLC -> add to interface-> registration of log of debug (or something like that... I tried to translate from my language to english)).

@Lay look in the 'window' menu -> messages. Did you reset the preferences in VLC? What language are you trying to display the subtitles in? What font is being specified for the subtitles, in the preferences?
