Does Anyone Have Working Settings for Quicktime Encoding?

Postby Haravikk » 28 Nov 2013 20:28

Okay, so I mostly use VLC for transcoding files into .mp4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Since I've been completely unable to get v2.0.0 or later to work with AAC audio I've given up and gone back to v1.1.12 for good, however switching back and forth seems to have ruined my previous v1.1.12 settings and my Time Machine backups only go so far back.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has configured their copy of v1.1.12 for encoding quicktime compatible H.264/x264 video and can upload the preferences folder found under ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc somewhere for me to download? I've already tried clearing it several times in order to go back and re-apply the various settings recommended in posts around these forums, but I simply cannot reproduce working settings at all.

Is this still a problem for you? What's your process for converting?

I think I ran in to the same issue (https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/12071) and have a hacky workaround. You can either:

a) rename the converted .m4v file to .mov to get something Quicktime Player and iTunes seem to like, but I'm not sure is a fully correct MOV file, or
b) open the resulting .m4v file in a hex editor and replace 'qt ' with 'isom' near the top of the file (in the 'ftyp' box).

If you're still working on this problem, let me know if this workaround works for you. I'm curious as to whether it's the same issue.
