Can't play DVD

Postby superdx » 16 Dec 2013 15:08

Hello,

I recently bought this DVD and it seems to only play in Mac DVD Player, and Windows Media Player on Bootcamp. If I try to play with VLC, it fails. If I browse the file system, the entire disc appears blank. I've also tried disabling menus in VLC.

Here is a log of VLC trying to open the disc:

Code: Select all

I have 2.1.2 on another machine, and same result... is 2.1.1 special? Downloading it now.

Edit: Apologies for posting Win stuff in the Mac/iOS corner. I just searched for DVD issues and found this thread. Nevertheless, seems to be a problem with the latest release version.

Having issues with playing DVDs as well, on Win7 Pro 64bit with SP1. Definitely seems to be an issue with VLC V2.1.2, because in V2.1.1 and before, any DVD plays just fine (for me anyway) like it should.

In V2.1.2, this is my error log:
main debug: adding item `dvd:///H:/' ( dvd:///H:/ )
main debug: processing request item: dvd:///H:/, node: Playlist, skip: 0
main debug: no fetch required for (null) (art currently (null))
main debug: rebuilding array of current - root Playlist
main debug: rebuild done - 1 items, index 0
qt4 debug: Adding a new MRL to recent ones: dvd:///H:/
main debug: starting playback of the new playlist item
main debug: resyncing on dvd:///H:/
main debug: dvd:///H:/ is at 0
main debug: creating new input thread
main debug: Creating an input for 'dvd:///H:/'
main debug: using timeshift granularity of 50 MiB, in path 'd:\'
main debug: `dvd:///H:/' gives access `dvd' demux `' path `/H:/'
main debug: enforced demux ` any'
main debug: creating demux: access='dvd' demux='any' location='/H:/' file='H:\'
main debug: looking for access_demux module matching "dvd": 12 candidates
dvdnav warning: cannot open DVD (H:)
dvdread error: DVDRead cannot open source: H:
main debug: no access_demux modules matched
main debug: creating access 'dvd' location='/H:/', path='H:\'
main debug: looking for access module matching "dvd": 20 candidates
main debug: no access modules matched
main error: open of `dvd:///H:/' failed
main debug: dead input
main debug: changing item without a request (current 0/1)
main debug: nothing to play
The error log for "No Menus" start/dvdsimple is only insignificantly different. VLC V2.1.2 also seems to have some major difficulties playing VCDs as well, though I guess for other reasons.

Here's some of what I tried before:
Different DVD drives (internal SATA DVD-ROM and external USB DVD burner) - not playing.
Regular DVD play, "No Menus" and other varieties of "Open Disc..." settings - not playing.
Starting the DVD in VLC via command line options - not playing.
Different (original) DVDs - not playing.
VLC V2.1.2 32bit and 64bit builds - not playing.
Deleting/resetting all user settings to default "first start" values - not playing.
Freshly downloading VLC installer and ZIP/7Z packages (which I prefer to installers) - not playing.
Deleting dvdcss folder - not playing.
Playing a DVD first in other player software where it plays just fine, such as Media Player Classic, MPlayer and Windows Media Player, before starting VLC - not playing (in VLC).
