AirPlay / Chromecast / DLNA support for WiFi TV streams?

Postby mcandre » 03 Oct 2013 01:57

Right now, you can get VLC videos onto an HDTV with an Apple TV and a Mac, mirroring the whole screen with AirPlay Mirroring, but I'd like to stream just the VLC app by itself, and letting it run in the background, while doing other work on my computer.

This is possible with Beamer, but it's nonfree, and Mac only. This is also kind of possible with AirParrot, but it's nonfree and laggy. I love VLC, and would like to see builtin support for WiFi streaming to TVs.

Like AirPlay, Chromecast can stream to an HDTV, from Chrome tabs, and full screen mirroring, but it's not ideal. If VLC could integrate with the AirPlay SDK and Chromecast API, that would play more nicely with multitasking. For example, you could start a video on VLC, stream to a TV, minimize VLC, and work on an essay at the same time.

It looks like the chromecast API can only be used on Android, iOS, and Chrome. Normal PC or Mac versions would not be able to use this API.
