how to recover from read errors gracefully?

Postby chinarut » 27 Sep 2005 18:28

While playing a VCD, my VLC freezes up with the spinning colored beachball.

In my console:
[00000458] access_file access error: read failed (Input/output error)

A force quit makes the window disappear and VLC still appears in the dock.

I can run other apps (ie. Console, Terminal, Camino, etc) and it appears to freeze up my Finder as well.

Is there a graceful way to recover from this?

The only solution I've found is a hard power off which I assume I can avoid by killing the right processes.

I've tried both the internal combo drive on my mac mini and an external DVD writer over USB.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide!

I've verified that the Finder does not successfully copy the .DAT file:

"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "FILE.DAT" could not be read or written. (Error code -36). [OK]"

How may I file an enhancement request so VLC catches a similar error internally?

or is this a middleware issue?
