You don't need to install x264. It is included in VLC. VLC 0.8.2 can play most H.264 movies already, but some fixes and additions will be shipped with the next release (0.8.4). We will publish a first beta version of that within the next 2 days.
VLC 0.8.2 can already encode movies with H.264 using the x264-library already btw.
