VLC not disabling fullscreen mode after a video ends?

Using VLC 2.1.0 on OS X 10.7.5, if a video is viewed in fullscreen, allowed to finish on its own, and then another video file is opened, VLC will open that video in fullscreen unless fullscreen mode is manually disabled. This is with "native fullscreen mode" disabled and fullscreen not being the default display mode for all videos. Is this an intended behavior and/or something that can be disabled?
