m3u playlist times end prematurely

I'm running 2.0.6 in Max OS 10.8.4 (this also happened in 10.8.3, though), and when I play an .m3u playlist, often (but inconsistently and not always) VLC will stop playing one of the items and move on to the next song in the list. The same m3u playlist played in iTunes doesn't show this behavior (though I have other reasons not to like how iTunes handles m3u playlists!).

Is this a known problem and is there any workaround?
