VLC won't play Region 1 dvd

I have an Imac, Mac OS 10.3.9. When i try to play region 1 dvd i get shis message (or no message at all):
main: stream chained failed for `std{access=file,mux=ts,url=""}'
main: cannot start stream output instance, aborting
