g5 optical out surround, does it work?

Does vlc have support for 5.1 audio from optical out through a reciver?
I can't get it to work anyway and have been told it is not supported but I wanted to ask here to be sertain.

What device do you have to connect to the optical cable? I know the Sonica Transit, for one. I think supplying the optical output is up to interface. I read that Apple's DVD Player will let the digital audio pass through.

I use a yamaha v550 reciever. Yeah it works fine with apple dvd player, it's with vlc I don't get 5.1 surround.
