VLC suddenly crashing after 3-5 seconds?

I don't understand... it seemed to work fine in 0.8.1 and the base 256MB ram in my Mini. Now, after I have upgraded to 1GB, it crashes in both 0.8.1 and 0.8.2. this is regardless of whether I use an "open with" on a file or standalone mode

ok, i have a candidate for what is causing it: I turned off ical, which I hadn't ever used concurrently w/vlc before, and then brought vlc up as a standalone. I didn't run any video, but it stayed up okay. then I reloaded ical, and when I went back to vlc, it had frozen open.

okay, I had a "raise error" that I found also mentioned over at viewtopic.php?t=10112&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60.
The instructions to remove the plist didn't work, but the removal of lib-pref-vlc did. I'm not using APE, afaik, I don't know what it is. I do see that I seem to be using an OS version others are not? Maybe it's a mac mini specific build? Or denotes the drop-in upgrade?

anyway, file this under more raise error weirdness, I guess.

Broken plugins cache perhaps. If you remove the entire VLC dir in the Preferences, then this gets deleted. Might explain this issue.

Could you please give this semi-techie instructions on how to do this? I'm having the same problem -- movie (VOB files) starts then quits after a few seconds. Thanks.

I have the same crashing problem. Yesterday it all streamed fine via CYTV server and client to my VLC. Today l added a NAS to my router and when l opened the VLC it comes up for a few secs and then disappears. I am gutted. Is there anyone out there with a non techie answer. I cannot access the VLC preferences as the program disappears before l can look through the pref to see if there is a tweek. There is mention here of broken plug ins. How do you know if it is broken and how does one fix that?

I am having the same problem. I tried deleting my prefs cache for VLC (~Library/Preferences/VLC/cache), but that didn't seem to make a difference.

VLC seems to stay up fine, it's only when I enable the DAAP service discovery module that it crashes. If I look at the messages log, it finds my DAAP share (mt-daapd running on linux) and I can even start to browse the share in the playlist, but only if I'm fast. It always seems to crash out in 5 seconds or so.

I'm on a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz w/ 1GB of Crucial RAM.

I have the same problem.... Happened after I was looking through the settings in advanced mode... Dont remember if I changed something though (grrr...)... Could it be that the settingsfile is corrupt in someway?

DAAP is still experimental. It is VERY likely to crash.

Tried to delete the VLC directory but the VLC window (program) didnt stay open long enough to open it. I know that it is an early release but VLC worked so well in association with CyTV before. Any other ideas?

You use the Finder to open folders, not VLC of course .....

And the DVD issue of Bon is probably just a DVD material issue. Try other formats.

At last, l am back to streaming. Despite deleting the VLC file in the applications folder a subsequent reload produced the same crash after 3 secs.

The suggestion to seach through preferences took me to Mac HD > User > username > Library > Preferences > VLC and there was another vlc associated file. I deleted that after trashing the VLC in applications and reloaded the whole lot again.

Now the vlc folder within with Mac HD > User > username > Library > Preferences has called itself org.videolan.vlc................and the vlc programme is up and running. I hope that this helps my fellow VLCers.

I had the exact same problem as you, and it has a very easy fix. For some reason, if the folder your .VOBs are in isn't labled "VIDEO_TS", you have a 50/50 chance of having it play.

Fix? easy. Rename the surrounding folder VIDEO_TS and your troubles should go away.

I have the same crash after about 4 seconds but it only happens with .mkv files (matroska files) I tried deleting the dir in prefs but that didn't fix anything. I saw in a forum for a different player that you can "enable the internal Matroska support in the options under the Filters settings> Source filters" but I didn't see anything of the sort. Any ideas?

I'm running VLC 0.8.2 on an iBook G3 700Mhz, OS10.2.8 with 640MB RAM. VLC's great, but recently I seem to be having a similar problem as the others discussed here: about 50% success rate watching Matroska video files (it comes up for a few seconds, then crashes) and it won't open .ogm (dual-audio) files at all. I actually updated my VLC from 0.7.2 a few days ago thinking that new codecs might help, but no luck there. I'm not much of a techie, would really appreciate some help with this problem, thanks.

I've got a 400mhz g4 tower w/896 mb ram. Yesterday I was running this app fine. Now, everytime I run it it crashes before I can get anything open. I've only had the program for about a week, but I haven't had any issues with it before...

I've tried reinstalling it. I deleted the preferences -> vlc folder & tried reinstalling. Now, the window doesn't even appear.

I searched for VLC on my hdd & deleted everything. I redownloaded the 0.8.2.dmg file & am trying again.


That did it. HTH everyone else who's having this problem... I do remember trying to edit the prefs in advanced mode...

Since version 0.8.x VLC crashes almost every time I want to play a movie (sometimes it works though)! 0.7.2 is rock solid!!

I already deleted all prefs and the VLC directory but that didn't help!

In addition VLC 0.8.2 does not play 5.1 AC3 sound via my M-Audio Revolution 7.1 PCI card anymore - well, it does play but only stereo! 0.7.2 does NOT have this problem, AC3 sounds plays as it should (settings are the same)!

I just had the same problem. But I know exactly what I changed and in the 5 seconds it took to change it back I managed to fix it(after like 5tries of course)

I had gone into the preferences and changed Interface --> General and I had clicked on the "Mac OS X Interface" and when I reopened VLC it crashed cosntantly every 3-5secs.

Glad I could change it back in time!

The fix for this problem seems to be to delete every file accociated with VLC, except the player itself. this is really easy if you have spotlight. Just search VLC, and delete the prefs files that come up, then search Preferences and you should get a couple folders. open them up and find the folder inside the prefs folder called VLC. delete it. This worked for me.
