VLC cannot play certain .avi files

Postby arnold » 10 Aug 2005 15:14

Hi,

Have been using VLC for some years now to full satisfaction. Lately however I am encountering more and more AVI files that VLC apparently is unable to play.
Platform is Mac dual G4 1.42 GHz running OSX 10.4.2 and VLC 0.8.2. Although the movie appears to play as evidenced by the Controller, there is neither an image nor sound. Instead I get the error message:
avi: avi module discarded (invalid file)

Can anyone suggest what is wrong? Is it a format VLC does not recognise and if so what player should I use (Tried Quicktime, Windows Media Player and MPlayer OS X)?

These files cause Quicktime and MPlayer OS X and Finder (when trying to get info with Command-i) to become non-responding. What type of movie file can it be?

Thanks,
arnold

Hi,

I am experiencing exactly the same and I've also been wondering about this lately. So any kind of explanation/ idea would be welcomed with open arms ;)

(Using OSX 10.3.9 and VLC 0.8.2)

thanks,
sask

The files are broken. I have seen an increase of these files in the wild as well lately (Battlestar Gallactica crimson rips come to mind). I'm guessing some popular avi producing program is creating broken files that still work icw Windows Media Player 10 for Windows (which doesn't mean the files are valid).
Don't use PMs for support questions.
