do the 4 others of you that still notice the problem want to check the recent nightlies (vlc-2.0.5-20121212-0203) to see if that fixes the problem for you like it did for xplo?

I have the same issue playing Apple Lossless files on Windows 7 / VLC 2.0.5 as well.

as xplo mentioned, vlc-2.0.5-20121212-0203 nightly fixes the issue for me.

I can't see the exact one you specified so I downloaded the nearest one I could find vlc-2.0.5-x86_64-20121212-0314.zip. The issue is still there. :(

OS X 10.8.2

I second that.

On OS X 10.6.8 audio gets crackly/noisy every once in a while, which doesn't occur for instance in VLC 2.0.2

I'm having the same problem with VLC 2.0.5 as well as the nightly build of 2.0.6 vlc-2.0.6-x86_64-20121226-0314. .m4a files (ripped from my own CD collection) sound "stuttery" constantly....their unlistenable.

I've tried the suggestions here (set the volume to something below 100%, trash the .plist files in ~/Library/Preferences, etc. None of that seems to work. VLC 1.1.12 works perfectly!

[Mountain Lion 10.8.2]

Anyone found another idea to try?

Try running VLC in 32 bit mode. This solved it for me, with VLC 2.0.5 on Mac OS X 1.6.8.

Select the VLC application in finder, "Get info" in File menu, then check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox.

I hope this helps!

@i-like-vlc: Thanks very much for the tip! Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I quit VLC, checked the "open in 32 bit mode" box and restarted it, and it still stutters terribly. I'm glad it worked for you, but alas it didn't for me. I guess I'll need to stick with 1.1.12 until (hopefully it's "until" and not "unless"!) 2.x gets fixed.

Had the same problem then reinstalled the latest VLC and downloaded (vlc-2.0.5-20121212-0203) and extracted it to the program file folder overwriting all files in the folder with the files contained in (vlc-2.0.5-20121212-0203) and no more chipmunks :-)

vlc-2.0.4-x86_64-20121016-0315 worked for a while, but it is very unstable

vlc-2.1.0-x86_64-20130104-0111 plays flac files converted to apple lossless, but it is unstable ... doesn't matter whether it is in 32 bit or 64 bit mode ... it will play a single track but crash on opening next track.

Has this problem been solved? I am having the same symptoms using Windows 7, SP1, 64 bit.

How long will it take to fix this bug? It's been months and still can't play Apple Lossless. Even tried the nightly's but every time it crashes and they're totally unstable!!!

This is getting ridiculous!

The instability was limited to execution on OS X Mountain Lion (OS bug) and was worked-around for the latest (and future) nightly builds.

Regarding the actual issue: we will have a fix for that in 2.0.6, which will be out soonish.

The chipmunk issue is still there. Apple Lossless plays fine in iTunes so I guess we have to use that until VLC is fixed (it's been a long time though!)

The issue is still there in 2.0.6 using OS X 10.6.8. :(
M4A audio suddenly starts to sound noisy/scratchy for a while and then it goes back to normal. When this happens I get the following in the log:

audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-40001 us)
not synchronized (-40001 us), resampling
buffer too early (-40002), down-sampling
resampling stopped after 9543443 usec (drift: -429)

Why there seems to be no ticket created to address this serious issue?

Well, it fits the description of the OP, which seems to still have the issue. I suppose it is happening only on OS X, but doesn't it need to be addressed?

EDIT: I can try to help investigating this issue, although I am not a VLC developer.
