Air Play Mirroring: No sound

MacBook Air 2011 running Mountain Lion.

When playing video with VLC and air play mirroring to Apple TV, video plays through TV fine but audio continues to play through the MacBooks speakers. I had watched many videos without this problem and then occasionally the sound wouldn't mirror when starting a new mirroring instance or new VLC instance. Restarting the mirroring and VLC several times would often resolve the problem eventually. I couldn't detect why it would sometimes work and sometimes not. Now it won't resolve despite rebooting the computer and reinstalling VLC.

Weird.

Honestly, VLC wasn't tested with AirPlay due to the lack of a testing environment. I'll see if I can emulate one with a 2nd Mac in the next few days to squash these bugs.

Sorry if this got fixed somewhere else... But I thought I was having this same issue yesterday... But under the "Audio" menu I had the option to select "Air Play Device" instead of "Built in device" or something like that. Fixed the problem.

I set up a testing environment for AirPlay on Mountain Lion yesterday and indeed, if you switch the audio device as hinted here, it works great, both for sound and video.

Has any progress been made on this issue? Changing the Sound Output in Preferences has no effect.

It works correctly for me if you switch the output device in the "Audio" menu.

From within the 'Audio" menu of VLC there is no output device switching option, at least I'm not seeing it...

I had the same problem. If you turn on AirPlay Mirroring while VLC is open it does not work.

You must switch on AirPlay mirroring before opening VLC player.

Same problem here. When I set "Airplay" as the audio device, the video becomes very, very choppy. Basically plays for a second, then waits for 6-7 seconds. This is basically unwatchable. What am I missing?

I'm trying to play the VLC video on my iMac, but want to play the sound on Cambridge Audio's "Minx 100" speaker.
