Black screen when using another monitor?

I recently purchased a monitor for my MBP. When I play videos through VLC and put them into full screen mode on my monitor, the screen on my mac goes black... When i go full screen mode on any other videos, such as through youtube, this doesnt happen. Is there a way to disable this? im running the most recent versions of OSX and VLC.
