Blinking Subtitles

Postby golias » 11 Aug 2005 08:49

I watch a lot of Japanese anime DVD's, and I love how VLC can be set up with the "blur" de-interlace feature, which looks a heck of a lot better than how the Apple DVD Player handles the material.

However, whenever there is more than one "line" of subtitles, VLC seems to have a huge problem.

For example, somebody could be saying a line like "I've got a great idea, let's go into that store over there."

In the middle of them saying that line, the sign for the store the character is pointing at appears on screen, so a subtitle pops up to translate the sign.

When the sign subtitle pops up, the dialog translation briefly disappears and reappears. Then, when the sign subtitle goes away, it happens again.

This is really distracting, because when you watch a lot of subtitles, your eyes become kind of trained to start over at the beginning whenever subtitles vanish and re-appear, because that normally should only happen when it's a new line being said.

On some disks, this odd behavior makes disks with subtitles almost unwatchable. Anybody have any idea how to fix this?
