VLC 2.0.1 isn't working

Postby GilDawson » 12 Jun 2012 07:08

This problem started when I downloaded and installed Version 2.0.1 Twoflower (Intel 64bit). It did not happen when we were using an older VLC version, before I upgraded a month or so ago. It happens on various DVDs. (I've tried at least three now.) It does not happen with DVD Player Version 5.2. It happens on two machines:

1. MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core Duo 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory running MacOS 10.6.8.

2. Mac Mini 1.55 GHz Intel Core Duo 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory running MacOS 10.6.8.

What happens:

1. I "magnetize" the DVD into a folder. (I do this to get past any media artifacts before we watch the show. I will delete the folder after we've watched the show.)

2. I launch VLC Player 2.0.1 then File -> Open File... and navigate to the folder.

3. The DVD's main menu comes up, but nowhere I click on it will start the show. Some clicks will have an effect on the screen (like marking a menu item) but none of the clicks will go to any of the submenus nor start the movie.

4. I pull down from Playback -> Title -> and select the Title that has the longest time entry (usually Title 1, over an hour).

5. VLC displays the Spinning Rainbow Pizza of Death for a few minutes, then reverts to the arrow cursor, all the while showing the DVD's menu. Then nothing more. I can click all over the menu and nothing happens. Even the control bar at the bottom no longer appears when I move the mouse. Boo.

6. We give up and switch to DVD Player. It plays the very same folder just fine.

We prefer (or used to prefer) VLC Player to DVD Player because VLC gives us some controls over gamma and whatnot that we find useful. But it's not working.

I tried, on the MacBook Pro:

1. Quitting VLC

2. Emptying the Trash then trashing the following:

- A folder named ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc
- A file named ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.plist
- A folder named ~/Library/Caches/fontconfig
- A folder named ~/Library/Caches/org.videolan.vlc

- (BTW, I noticed a file named ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.LSSharedFileList -- might it help to delete that, too?)

3. Trying to play the folder again, using Steps 2 through 5 of the procedure above.
- VLC started up with a couple of differences:

- a. It said it found a Preferences file for an old version, and suggested deleting it. I said yes.
- (It did not delete ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.LSSharedFileList.)

- b. It rebuilt the font cache.

Then exactly the same symptoms as before.

Any suggestions?

Either wait for the soon to be released 2.0.2 or download a 2.0.2 nightly to try. I find it to be better with dvds and a variety of others issues that have been fixed.

"soon to be released 2.0.2"--

I don't mind waiting. I'm glad to learn that it might not be something I did.

Thanks to the people who are working on this.

I too can run the 1.1.9 just fine, but 2.0.1 just won't play no matter what I do. Don't get me wrong, VLC ROCKS! :D

Here's some info that might help...

Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MM31.0081.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.35f0

This is on system software 10.6.8... oops I mean MacOS. ;)

I ran the 2.0.1 version from the command line with -vvv and then captured the debug file ... I've pasted it here without the "main debug: Buffering xx%" lines thinking that would be redundant. I couldn't get a debug file launching it from the finder.

Let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help with this.

Best,

T
