VLC 2.01 can't read DVD on OS X 10.6.8

Postby cubytus » 28 May 2012 03:37

Hi there,

I wanted to play a DVD movie using VLC. The movie is a zone 1, and the DVD drive has also been zoned as zone 1. In fact, the Apple DVD Player software plays it just fine.

However, neither VLC 32 bits or VLC 64 bits give out an image or sound. I read the FAQ, but there's nothing about this issue on Mac OS X.

I tried using Fairmount, but it states, strangely: "Fairmount was unable to load the required library from VLC." Even manually pointing it to VLC 32 bits gives the exact same message.

Also, Handbrake crashes when trying to rip the disc.

What is going wrong there?

For Handbrake and Fairmount, you didn't install libdvdcss, which is no longer provided by VLC for external applications.

Within VLC, DVD playback should be normal. Do you get a black video output or an error message?

Hi there,

first things first, why isn't libdvdcss not provided anymore for Mac? Where is the link?

Second, I don't get any error message. Not even a black screen. Just, the Play button becomes a Pause button for a second, then is back to the Play triangle. Nothing appears.

libdvdcss is still part of VLC for Mac. However, it is no longer accessible to other applications for technical reasons. Basically, 3rd party apps are not supposed to rely on other apps. However, there are easy ways for your to work-around this. Please just perform a quick search using your favorite search engine.

Regarding the DVD playback within VLC: please go to "Window" -> "Messages" and post the contents of this window here. Note that you need to save these to a RTF first, since copy & paste isn't enabled for this window.
