External video DVD drive

Postby StanFox » 02 Aug 2005 12:24

Hi,

I have an eMac with super-drive under X.3 Panther.

I play region-2 DVDs on it (with Apple DVD Player or VLC).
I have also region-1 DVDs and it is very frustrating and vexing not to be able to play these on my super drive :-(
I cannot understand Apple politics as PC (under Linux particularly) owners are more lucky with that :-(

As I definitlty do not want patch my drive firmware to make it region free (0) because this would void the warranty and could trash the drive if something goes wrong, I am thinking buying an external DVD drive for playing video region-1 DVD on it, and continuing playing video region-2 on my eMac.

But, but, before buying ... I would be confident that it will work !! :-)

Beacause builders or sellers do not answer :-( and I did not find anything on this forum, hereafter my questions :

1. Is it possible to make external USB or firewire DVD
player region-1 or region free ?

2. Does exist a video DVD drive that one can connect to an eMac ?

3. Does eMac/Mac OS X.3 recognize an external DVD drive ?
Will I have something special to do ?

4. As Apple DVD Reader cannot play video DVD from an external drive, does VLC do it ?

TIA
