ProRes on VLC

I am getting a lot of videos that use the ProRes codec. They play fine in Quicktime but not in VLC. Anyone know a way to play them in VLC?

Unfortunantly v2 does not properly support dual monitors. One of our monitors is digital projector so this is critical. Is there anything in V2 that can be used by V1?

What we want is full screen video with no Mac windows on the secondary monitor and the controls and playlist on the main monitor. What you get on the secondary monitor is a video window showing the red, yellow, and green buttons and the video controls at the bottom. All we want is the video!

Version 1 handled this fine. So how do I get v2 to do what v1 did?

You cannot. Either use VLC 2.0.x or do not.

Let me get this straight. At this time VLC 2 cannot properly handle fullscreen on a 2nd monitor. Will it ever? At this time VLC 1 cannot handle ProRes files. There is no alternative to VLC. So if you need full screen on a secondary monitor with ProRes support-too bad you are out of luck. Quicktime 7 pro does not work well with a secondary display as well and does not had playlists.

Does this problem also exist on the PC version of VLC 2? I hate to run my brand new Mac as a PC.

I believe when people develop updated programs they should not remove key features. Unfortunately Apple does this all the time.

VLC works perfectly fine on the 2nd monitor. You want it on the second monitor but you do not want buttons there. Either you patch VLC, or you wait for someone to do it for you, or you pay someone to do it for you, but you cannot complain about such an anecdotical feature.

I beg to disagree with you. If you can do it in V1 why not in V2? We are trying to use VLC to run a video projector for a Movie festival. Clearly one does not want the audience to view Apple windowing. We are a small non profit low budget outfit. Unfortunately many of the video makers use Apple ProRes. There does not seem to be any commercial programs that will do this below exorbitant prices.

As you might have seen, there was a full UI rewrite on the Mac. If you cannot understand that, I can't do anything for you.
So yes, this small feature is clearly not a priority. If you want, you can just directly fullscreen.

Moreover, your attitude does not incite us in any way to fix it.

I looked over all my replies. I do not understand why and am saddened that you are so upset. I am just a Mac user with a need to solve a dilemma. Isn't what these forums are for? I guess its time to end this discussion. Thank you for your time.

You claim VLC does not work in fullscreen on 2nd monitor, while it does.

You want video on the second monitor, in fullscreen, but also not in fullscreen and not with decorations. Use normal fullscreen on second monitor with VLC on the first one...

Thank you for your patience. For me Full screen means a picture like you get in Quicktime playback using Quicktime player. Just like you get on your home TV set. I have the fullscreen preference checked. I do not get Fullscreen when The FS device is set to screen one or screen 2.

Again VLC does this well.

Is there another preference I am missing? How can I send you a screen capture?

You can control VLC without gui, via http interface or telnet interface.

http interface:
1) Menu VLC -> Preferences -> Show All -> Interface -> Main Interfaces -> Lua
Change string in Lua Interface from "dummy" to "http".
2) Save
3) Menu VLC -> Add Interface -> Web
4) access http://localhost:8080 via your favorite browser.

telnet interface:
1) Menu VLC -> Preferences -> Show All -> Interface -> Main Interfaces -> Lua
Change host and port if you want to change. (I think you don't have to change.)
Set Password.
2) Save
3) Menu VLC -> Add Interface -> Telnet
4) Launch terminal. and do "telnet localhost 4212" (If you change host and port, this line is maybe different)

5) type "play", "pause", or something. "help", "?" command tells you what you can do.

I am having a similar problem to nealt when using VLC 2. Previously under VLC 1, I could add a video to the playlist and when double-clicking or pressing play it would open full-screen on my secondary display device. I had configured VLC to do this using the preferences as shown in the attached image. In VLC 2, using the same preferences, the video does not open full-screen on the secondary display, but as a window on the primary display. Can you confirm this and have any idea why this might be? Thanks in advance.

This is a bug in VLC 2 which is fixed for 2.0.2. We will release this update shortly.
