20120128-314 stable: startup volume preference self-zeros on exit somehow, even if the vlcrc file is manually edited, rather than pref set in GUI. vlc-stable-x86_64-20120115-0313 did not appear to have this issue

edit: added previous build i think was ok

Running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on an Intel Mac Mini with 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo Processor and 2GB of RAM, which is the maximum amount of RAM for this Mac I'm getting hundreds of the same error:

Code: Select all

[0x0-0x2606].org.videolan.vlc[414]Cannot delete stdin/stdout client
everytime I launch the VLC Player 2.0RC1.
As suggested in this blog post https://feepk.posterous.com/vlc-20-rc1-for-mac I downloaded the 2.0RC1 intel32.dmg from here http://download.videolan.org/pub/testin ... c1/macosx/ for this processor because it's just a Core Duo which is 32bit only.
Running the 2.0RC1 from command line in Terminal gives me the following output in terminal:

Code: Select all

[0x264e18] [cli] lua interface: Listening on host "*console". VLC media player 2.0.0-rc1 Twoflower Command Line Interface initialized. Type `help' for help.
Using command line I can play videos but it would be nice to use the GUI on Snow Leopard as well.
I deleted all my VLC Preferences with the according "Delete VLC Preferences" Script that's in the Goodies folder of the 2.0RC1 dmg.
I hope this helps and that you are able to fix this issue in a RC2.
Let me know if you need more information and how I can provide them.

CPU-Load is 50% higher than v1.1.12.

What is about extended GPU Hardware Acceleration on Macs? It was promised many times in the past. But still no sign of it.
Plex plays video so much smoother...

My xspf playlist doesn't work with this new version! When I start it, it just appears in the window with this yellow triangle on the left. No error message or something.
I return to the old 1.1.12, my playlist consists almost 500 video files :(

@mav_eric: download the binary again please. There was a packaging bug in the first dmg.

@mac_man_ad: known issue now. To be fixed in the next RC. :)

@FrankSmith: hardware acceleration was done, but isn't stable enough on Mac with more than one GPU at the moment, which why we don't ship it so far. However, VLC 2.0 includes ffmpeg-mt, which basically means that VLC can use all the CPU cores now, which should dramatically speed-up the playback of HD content.

@kicker04: could you file a ticket on trac.videolan.org/vlc, so we don't forget to fix this? thanks!

Thanks for the answer. Why not automatically detect the no. of GPU's and disable GPU-acceleration only, if there are more than one GPU present? Or use the first active & suitable GPU for complete acceleration and ignore the other ones? Maybe a look in the Plex-sources could give some inspiration, how to handle multiple GPUs. Or just simplier: Include a setting and let the user switch GPU accelaration on his likes.

Again: Plex plays video so much smoother. CPU parallelization will not bring so much efforts. I have a current Quad-Core iMac and the CPU is near by idle (ok, 2 - 4%) when I play HD-content. There is no question of less CPU-power. But let me repeat: Plex is even so much smoother with it's GPU-acceleration. May be there is implemented some frame-rate-doubler, which also brings some additional smoothness. I am sorry, I like VLC as a player so much more than plex, but watching movies is currently much more enjoyable on Plex because of its smooth play.

I am sorry, I don't wanted to offend someone. As stated out, I love VLC - much more than Plex. But there is still room for improvements - specially, when these improvements are promised for more than a year and supposed to be nearly finished with minor flaws. I personally have had big hopes for comprehensive GPU acceleration in v2. I just gave you some hints how it would be possible to give users the possibility to use near finished GPU implementation, if they like to do so. Thank you for your hard work.

We coded all the video acceleration into libavcodec. We did not add the missing bits because we don't have enough developer time on OSX.

I use Version 2.0.0-rc1 Twoflower (Intel 64bit) here on MacOS X 10.7.2 and I have at some MPEG4 movie files no audio output. The files are encoded with Handbrake.
With regular version 1.12 can I play this movies.

Hello,
Subtitles (srt) do not seem to work for me with version 2.0.0-RC1. Also, the option to provide another subtitle source is not accessible (text is grey and it tells me I have a subtitle even when there are none in the same folder as the video).
Any idea ?

Thanks

Y.

In RC1 on Mac I'm not able to play multicast TV streams anymore.

Code: Select all

Your input can't be opened VLC is unable to open the MRL 'rtp://@232.232.65.53:5004'. Check the log for details.

Code: Select all

main error: cannot join multicast group: Protocol not available main debug: no access_demux module matching "rtp" could be loaded

UDP streaming doesn't work.
Example:

Code: Select all

On VLC 1.1.12 it works fine.

I cannot resize the app window with my mouse cursor by holding down a modifier key (with an application like Zooom, MondoMouse, Flexiglass, etc.) anymore in version 2.0. I can still move a window by holding down a modifier key, but resizing does not work. I never had an issue resizing this way in version 1.1.12. My hotkeys for half size, double size, etc., also only register occasionally.

UDP streming doesnt work. Also "open a subtitle is greyed out, cannot add them. Drag and drop of subtitles in a window of playing video still doesnt work - this feature is enabled in Windows for quite some time now.. It would be really nice to have it on Mac :)

1. Windows-like "My computer" at the left panel in mac-version. WTF?
2. No IPTV anymore (m3u-list from provider). See the log

Code: Select all

I'm using white external IP and my mac is behind the NAT with local IP's 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0

Use RTP.
Say it to our IPVT providers! Is it the best solution from developers?

Use RTP.
Do you mean that just as a troubleshooting step, or do you mean to say that raw UDP support was removed on purpose? We won't be able to easily change existing raw UDP based IPTV systems if this feature was taken out.

In any case, changing to RTP doesn't help. Here's the tail end of the log I get when I try:

Code: Select all

main debug: `rtp://@224.10.10.10:50000' gives access `rtp' demux `' path `@224.10.10.10:50000' main debug: creating demux: access='rtp' demux='' location='@224.10.10.10:50000' file='(null)' main debug: looking for access_demux module: 1 candidate main debug: net: opening 224.10.10.10 datagram port 50000 main error: cannot join multicast group: Can't assign requested address main debug: no access_demux module matching "rtp" could be loaded main debug: TIMER module_need() : 1.099 ms - Total 1.099 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 1.099 ms) main debug: creating access 'rtp' location='@224.10.10.10:50000', path='(null)' main debug: looking for access module: 0 candidates main debug: no access module matched "rtp" main debug: TIMER module_need() : 0.172 ms - Total 0.172 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 0.172 ms) main error: open of `rtp://@224.10.10.10:50000' failed main debug: finished input main debug: dead input main debug: changing item without a request (current 0/1) main debug: nothing to play
udp://@... URLs give much the same errors. The "Can't assign multicast address" part is in red, and appears to be the real issue. Since both UDP and RTP URLs need multicast group joining to work, I'd suggest this is where the problem lies.

VLC 1.1.12 works just fine with this video source, using both raw UDP and RTP stream types.

Use RTP.
A few posts above I posted that RTP doesn't work. Even before those other people started reporting that UDP doesn't work too.
