VLC Plugin for mac in 64bit

Postby npmaster » 12 Jan 2012 10:44

Hey guys,

I am pretty sure i know what the answer will be for this one. But thought I will best ask.

How possible is it to compile the VLC Plugin for Mac OS X in 64bit. It doesn't matter even if it is the older 1.0.5 one.

If it isn't possible, what is causinig the issues? How mad is it for me to try to compile it.

It probably seems strange I know, but it is annoying having to keep an old copy of firefox around so i can just use the plugin.

Thanks loads

The browser plugin isn't 64bit compatible, because it still makes use of 32-bit API-only Carbon API.

There will be improvements (read re-writes) later this year, but not for VLC 1.2. Patches are welcome!

Thanks Felix for the reply,

I am sorry i do vaguely remember that being mentioned along time ago.

Is the work required then to convert from the Carbon API to the Cocoa API. If someone was to attempt to do this, which version of the code would you suggest they start from for the plugin. 1.0.5 or should they directly start looking at 1.2/1.3 git. If that makes sense?

Directly have a look at 1.2/1.3. A lot of things changed within VLC and some improvements to the plugins were already done.

VLC 1.2 will be out really soon now (TM), so you can consider its source as quite stable.

Well, the biggest work would be to fix the minimal_macosx module.
