VLC not playing DVDs

Postby mpw » 19 Dec 2011 17:46

I have three Macs, a year old iMac, a 13" MacBook from late 2008 and a Mac Mini maybe from about the same time.

I just recently update all of these computers to Lion. At some point I decided to try VLC to watch a DVD. At first I thought I was having problems with the region code but further testing showed that two of these three computers are unable to watch any kind of DVD. The iMac works fine but neither the MacBook nor the Mac Mini are able to view DVDs. When I add the DVD to the play list and hit play it looks like it's starting at first but it becomes inactive after a few seconds before the video window opens.

Here is the VLC Debug Log:

Have you changed the firmware on the DVD player? Have you tried seeing if you have the same issue with the official Apple DVD player application? Is this only happening with certain DVDs?
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

No, I have not changed the firmware. The official Apple DVD player application works as expected. I've tried it with at least three or four different DVDs, some from the US, some from Germany and some from the UK. They all exhibit the same behavior, although I didn't check the log for all of them so I don't know whether they all have the same messages.
