File not recognized

Postby AgentZer0 » 28 Mar 2011 03:59

I'm trying to download VLC so that I can watch avi movie files on my mac, but every time I have tried to download it I get the message that the file is not recognized. It is the .dmg file specified for the mac os X, but I don't know what to do? Can anyone tell me how I can fix this so that I can use VLC? This is the only media player that I trust for my computer. If you can help me, that would be great.

Is there no one that can help me figure out this problem? Are there any Mods or Admins that have any kind of input for my problem?? There's got to be some way to fix this, because if not, it could mean bad more for other Mac users.

Can you please provide more info? What version of mac os are you using.

I am assuming you are downloading the .dmg file. Are you able to mount the file in finder?

Have you installed the application? Are you trying to exploit your movie in VLC or simply clicking on the movie? Have you set the preferred application as VLC for said movie?

Lemme know

I'm currently having the same problem attempting to install VLC on my OSX. I get an error window saying that the "disk images failed to mount" and saying that "vlc-1.1.10.dmg" is "not recognized". Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Same here.
Just installed Lion on my MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74).
Downloaded the last VLC (vlc-1-1.1.12.dmg).
Beside this file does not appeared on the desktop like usually and I had to look for it with Spotlight, when clicking on it in Spotlight a small Warning window opens with this comment: vlc-1-1.1.12.dmg not recognized.
Any help ?

Your download is corrupted. Try downloading again and report back if it still fails.

Same problem here.
Installed it on my iMac (Mac OS X Snow leopard 10.6.7).
Downloaded the last VLC (vlc-1.1.12.dmg). Same error. "FILE NOT RECOGNIZED".
Other dmg files ARE working. It's just this one that won't do it.
I've already downloaded the file 4 times and it still doesn't work.

hmm, I can't reproduce this problem. It's probably a broken file on one of the sourceforge mirrors.

Could you please give your location (country is enough) and preferably even the mirror name? It's shortly displayed in the few seconds prior to the begin of the download..

I was helping my brother out this morning as he was having the same problems as here. I eventually fixed it from a help from another thread on here. My question for this thread is if my location matters when I download the install files? Just for future reference as someone in here mentioned that it can be the cause of problems if you use the wrong mirrors.

Thanks
Will

Will, your location doesn't really matter.

However, source forge (our mirror provider) uses about 25 mirrors around the world to distribute VLC. Some of these tend to break from time to time (resulting in the mentioned error). Since the mirror selection is based on your location, this information could help us to detect the defect mirror.

I have a VPN, and I tried downloading it from LA (4 times), Hong Kong, Sydney, and London. I'm located in Mainland China. I keep getting the same error message.

Are there any instructions for installing from source for OS X? I just see instructions for various Linuxes.

Thanks!
Sara
