VLC & MKV After Lion Upgrade

Postby Soju Ninja » 03 Oct 2011 14:39

Been using VLC for years with no problems but after updating to Lion suddenly i have problems with random MKV's. Certain MKV's that i was able to play fine pre-update now show a frozen blank screen, a green screen, or just the first title screen. I can hear audio but no video. Since Quicktime X doesn't play MKV's with Perian with OS Lion i need my VLC! I really regret updating to Lion...everything worked just fine why did i have to go jump for the newest shiny thing...

Reset your preferences.
Didn't work. I also deleted the VLC Preferences. This may be an issue of how VLC handles MKV formats in OS X Lion. I know that for anime especially people recode MKV's differently...not all MKV's are the same. Just a guess though, i don't really have any idea why VLC is only playing some MKV's and not others especially when it worked perfectly pre-Lion update. The videos DO play using Perian in Quicktime 7 though. Perian hasn't been updated for Quicktime X in Lion yet.

*Edit

I just tried the user build VLC for Mac OS X 64-bit version and that worked! So i'm guessing it's something to do with 64-bit in Lion?

I use the 64-bit 1.1 branch nightlies and I don't have any issues playing mkv files under Lion.

Note that if you're trying to play new 10-bit mkv files, that those won't play until VLC 1.2 is ready.

Cheers for this!

The 10-bit MKV files must be the issue then. The stable 1.1-64bit version didn't play the MKV file but when i tried the 1.2-64bit unstable version it played the video just fine. I'll have to look up the whole thing about MKV formats i was totally unaware of any 10-bit or that there were different types of MKV files at all. Thanks again!

You should see that in the codec information dialog.
