Bugs and issues with 1.2.0 64bit (sep 19)

Postby TheSmokeMonster » 19 Sep 2011 15:09

Wow, it's great to see that vlc is playing with a new UI however it's a long ways away from being perfect.

I noticed that vlc is utilizing the native fullscreen mode Lion has ushered in. Since I have multiple monitors and I like to have vlc playing videos in the background while I work, I immediately turned this feature off.

The playlist window is stuck where the video plays. So I'm not able to edit the playlist and watch the video at the same time. This is a huge disappointment since I often start a video and add in other videos as the other one is playing (for tv shows or just a playlist).

Bugs:

Still no surround sound via digital out.

when playing a video in fullscreen, and selecting another one in finder, the fullscreen video shrinks to take up 3/4ths of the fullscreen video window exposing my desktop (see image), and also doesn't play the newly selected video but just restarts the one I was playing.

It would appear that it shrinks the screen to the native size of the video. So if I was playing a video that was 1080p and then the next video is 720, the video screen size shrinks to 720p ratio exposing even more of my background wallpaper. I have to double click the video to get out of fullscreen then double click to get back in fullscreen. this is a work around. This always happens with fullscreen videos when playing them in succession. In other words it fits the borderless window the video is playing in to the native video size itself, exposing the desktop behind it and taking away the black bars.

the bottom part of this image is my wallpaper of my dog. The other portion is vlc cropping out the black bars, exposing my desktop, not playing the video selected and breaking when in fullscreen mode.

MBP unibody 5,1 15" 8gb RAM Lion on a 1080i via minDL to HDMI. I deleted my preferences before installing and running.

Another bug: when changing the volume, there is a delay from changing the audio (gestures, slider, apple remote) and the action actually happening. So one could turn the volume all the way down but it take at least a second and a half for it to actually happen. I find this disorienting.

Another bug, Choosing the same video twice in finder will put them twice in your playlist. I believe before it would just play the video. As this doesn't happen, the playlist starts from the beginning, or in other words not playing the video you selected in finder if you have a playlist. Because of that, I assume that's why the file would appear twice in the playlist. Maybe this is something that had always happened in vlc though. But I recall if I selected a video that was already in VLC's playlist then it just went to that video.

I am definitely submitting these to VLC bug reporter as well but thought people should know. Interested to find out other people's experience with 1.2.

Command-W causes the window to disappear but I can still hear audio. Switching out of VLC and then back again reveals the video window again. So can't close video.

Pressing i while in Full screen no longer brings up the overlay controller.

Is there a way to lose the bottom controller in Lion Full screen? I'm aware turning off Lion native full screen in preferences works as before.

Extended Controls for Video Image Adjustment don't seem to change anything with the video.

Same old problem with the 5.1 sound channels being mixed up on OS X 10.7.1? At least here (same system which worked fine on 10.6.8 - this has been reported a lot in other threads)?

Sorry just seen that TheSmokeMonster has reported that the "other" audio issue has not been fixed either, hopefully both of these common problems will be sorted by when it's released?

After playing one video in VLC, double clicking a new video in the finder adds it to the playlist but starts playing the first video again and not the new video.

Adjusting the volume quickly doesn't change the volume immediatly and the volume changes trail seconds later. Very bad.

Hitting spacebar does not play / pause the video.

Can't select items in the playlist by clicking, although right-clicking works. Odd.

Seems like it's a long way from being even beta quality at this point.

Thanks for the reports. I was aware of some of these issues, but not of all of them.

I've started with bugfixing yesterday and will continue to do so throughout the week. However, please note that 1.2 isn't at a beta state at all yet, this is just "feature freeze" for the core module, so the feature set isn't even done for the UI.

If there's any bug fixes you want us to test, just let us know when a nightly is ready and I'm sure the people in this thread at least will help with the testing.

...and I'm sure the eventual beta will have most of these issues straightened out, otherwise it would be more of an alpha than a beta. Right now it's definitely alpha. :)

With the latest 1.2 branch nightly (1.2-branch-intel-20111129-0509).

• Cannot open preferences - nothing happens. Due to this I can't test non-native Lion Full screen.

• Command-W - still closes window but audio continues playing.

• Can video launch in a separate window so the playlist / media library can be accessed at the same time and also so the playlist window doesn't sometimes get resized super huge when the video stops?

• Can't access playlist / media Library when initially opening VLC until a video is opened. It shows the Drop media here area instead. Same thing if you remove all items from playlist, it switches to the drop media here area even though you have items in your media library.

• Can we have an option to lose the Drop media here thing entirely? Haven't needed it before, still don't need it now and it seems to just get in the way of other functionality.

• Pressing i while in Full screen still no longer brings up the overlay controller (can't test in non-native lion full screen). Doesn't work in Lion native either but may be due to controller always being at the bottom.

• Cursor and bottom controller still don't go away in Lion native full screen.

• Can the Video Effects sliders also show a number value indicator or have an option to snap to notched divisions (maybe while holding down option). This would allow one to make note of preferred settings that one could reset to later. Now it's completely arbitrary and you just slide to approximately similar levels. The Banding Removal has notches that snap similar to what I'm describing.

• In Video Effects, adjusting crop values causes the video to flixer and bounce around.

• Double-clicking a new video in the finder now begins playing correctly, except when a previous video was played from your media library. Once I've played a video from my library and then double-click a new video in the finder, no matter what, the first video I played from my library will start playing again instead even if it wasn't the latest video played from my library.

• Starting a video from the playlist doesn't always switch to the video even though it does start playing. Seems to occur when another video is still playing when you switch back to the playlist to select another. Another reason to keep the windows separate. Everything doesn't need to be crammed all in one less functional window.

• Adjusting the volume with the keyboard shows the an immediate change to the values in the OSD and interface but lags extremely in actually changing the volume still.

• Double-click a larger resolution video in the finder to play and then while it's playing double-click a new smaller video in the finder to play and it doesn't resize the window down to the size of the new video. It plays zoomed and adds black bars if necessary.

• Sometimes although I'm not sure what the trigger is, I lose the ability to select items in the playlist / media library.
