"main video output error: Invalid picture reference count"

I am on a Power Mac G5 (2.5 GHz Quad Core PowerPC, Mac OS X 10.5.8, all current updates).

At my work we have a video streaming service over UDP that allows us to tune into a few dozen cable TV channels using VLC. This service worked fine up through (and including) VLC 1.1.9. As soon as I installed 1.1.10 it all went to Hell. Almost no video, no sound and endless "main video output error: Invalid picture reference count (0x18fdf838, 0)" messages spewed out that caused my syslogd daemon to chew up 100% of the CPU:

I had to kill and restart syslogd to stop the carnage.

For a supposed "Security Update" 1.1.10 sure screwed the pooch!
