turning off Subtitles by default

Postby teacher24_70 » 21 Feb 2011 06:29

I'm running VLC version 1.1.7 on my Mac Mini (OS 10.6.6).

I've ripped some DVD's using MakeMKV and when I play them with VLC, the subtitles are on by default. I know that I can turn them off manually each time by disabling them in the Video>Subtitles menu. However, I have to do this with each and every file and would like to have them turned off by DEFAULT.

I've tried going into the preferences (all, not basic), but can't seem to get the settings correct so that they're off. "Subtitle Autodetection fuzziness" set to 0 is not disabling them. I even set this number to "99" as I saw recommended in older posts, but this still didn't work. I'm still having to turn them off each time.

"Autodetect subtitles files" is UNchecked.

What am I doing wrong? Is there another setting that I'm missing somewhere so that they will NOT show.

Put "none" as the default language in subtitles.

Which sub-setting is that in? I'm not finding a language for sub-titles in "all" preferences.

Okay. I found it in "basic" preferences, but I'm still getting subtitles.

Show all Settings and then select Input / Codecs.

Inside those settings there should be a 'Subtitles track' and 'Subtitles track ID' setting.

Set both to 0, Save, restart VLC, and subtitles should be off by default.

Wow, that's a lot of work to go through for something that should be the Default setting in the first place.
And I spent a LOT of time searching for this thread. Perhaps this issue could be addressed in a Stickie or the FAQ?
