VLC cannot open encoders

Computer: Mac G4 (PowerPC), OS X 10.4.11

I used to use VLC 0.9.9. I today discovered that there was a later version for Tiger, viz. 0.9.10 Grishenko - (c), and installed this. When I tried to transcode and save a stream (which played perfectly well in this new VLC), I got an error message, saying that VLC could not open the encoder. Why is this happening, and what can I do about it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Further to my cri de coeur above, if it turns out that VLC 0.9.10 (PPC version) or VLC 0.9.10 (universal version), both of which I have now tried (and both of which failed to open their encoders) is not compatible with my computer (Mac G4 PPC, OS X 10.4.11) despite the VideoLan website listing them as being for Tiger (OS X 10.4), where can I get a compiled version of VLC 0.9.9 for PPC from? When I installed VLC 0.9.10, I unfortunately failed to keep a copy of my old 0.9.9.

I found the code for it on the VideoLan site, but I am not knowledgeable enough to compile it, I am afraid, and though I found one or two sites on the Net that still had VLC 0.9.9, these were all Intel versions.

PS: Since posting the above, I have found a site that has a universal version of VLC 0.9.9a and have downloaded and installed it. So I am back to square one. But I should still be grateful for any information about VLC 0.9.10 not being able to open its encoders.
