no voice avi vlc 0.9.10

hello,
up until a week ago my avi files were playing fine. then i downloaded another one and the audio stuffed up. there is music/sound effects etc, but no voice (i can hear it just slightly, all downsampled/aliased and unintelligible). my vlc version os 0.9.10, os x tiger 10.4.11, intel mac book pro. it happens now to all the avi files i play in it, other audio i play through itunes is fine, i havn't played the avi's through quicktime. some avi's i try were fine a week ago, now don't work, also i can't skip ahead in the video at all, it just jumps back to the previous play position. could anyone offer any advice for resolving this issue?
