Split video

Hi,
I record TV from ADSL (Freebox) with VLC 0.8.5-test2 on a Mac Mini Intel with Mac Os X.
I'm looking for a program to cut off the beginning and the end of the produced mpg files, something like mpeg2cut2.exe in Windows.
Until now the only software I found use Quicktime Component for MPEG2, which is not free. A freeware would be better.
Can you help me ?

VLC is supposed to provide this function. I've not got it to work yet but maybe it will for you:

Open the Bookmarks window from the Windows menu. Play your video and click Add at your start and end edit points. Select both bookmarks and click Extract. This will open the Streaming/Exporting Wizard. Click through the wizard and the bookmarked selection should be saved as a new file.

Please post here if it works.

With the last nightly build for Intel :
I was too quick yesterday. I found the bookmark box and I set bookmarks. The problem is that the time of the bookmark is not set : each bookmark has a position, but the time is always 0. So when I chose two bookmarks and press the "extract" button, VLC doesn't know what part to extract.
I can set times in seconds with extraction wizard (command-shift-W) but VLC won't extract the art I chose.

With version 0.8.4 for Power PC :
Times in the bookmarks box are OK, I can extract a part of the video, the new file is smaller than the original one, the length is correct, but it didn't start at the point I chose.

I'll check this on my PowerPC-iMac, but since I don't have access to an Intel-Mac with a screen, fixing the other bug might become a bit tricky. Anyway, I'll have a look. Thanks for reporting.

As a matter of fact I have both TS and PS mpg files.
The times (in seconds) are set only with PS files. And you can extract time-based part of files only with PS. But whatever the time positions I chose, the extracted file always starts at the beginnig of the original file, not my poisition time.

I've had the same problem. I tried to use bookmarks to set the partial extract start and stop times, but the extraction always starts at the beginning of the file.

I have an mp4 and would like to extract a 6:45 portion of the file. The Export Wizard did give me a file that's 6:45 in length, but it's the first 6:45 of the film, not the 6:45 I wanted. I tried a few different formats and set the times with the position and times that the bookmarks show.

I did not have the same problem Manu did - my bookmarks do show time codes (instead of 0).

is there any other program that could extract a defined portion of a file?

I am not changing any compression or formatting.

Hi all, I'm new here.
Has anyone found the answer to the problem posed by e42mercury and others here, where despite using bookmarks the extraction always starts at the beginning of the file? I have the same problem trying to divide an mpeg4 into segments.
