Real Media Audio Capture

Postby bowjest » 30 May 2009 17:52

Dear All,

I've spent several hours now trying to first figure out, then researching a possible answer to my problem, but must now concede defeat and ask for help. :(

I have a MacBook Pro laptop (10.5.7) running VLC (Version 0.9.4 Grishenko (Intel)). The BBC has a series of afternoon plays that I would like to capture and I have the RTSP address for the Real Media file that hosts the show, but try as I might, I can't get it to capture this. It plays fine, but when I try to create a capture of the program, it just sounds like it's been put in fast forward.

Here is what I do:

1. Load the .ram file I have downloaded and start playing the program
2. Save the program as a playlist (.m3u file)
3. Open the Streaming Wizard and select to use the stream
4. In the next window, under Audio, I select Transcode Audio mp3 and leave the Bitrate at the default 192
5. Choose container in next window as raw and finish

This starts playing the data into the .raw file that is created, but when I then re-name this to .mp3 to open and edit in Audacity, it just sounds like a tape played in fast forward.

Can someone please let me know where I've gone wrong with the above? I am a more or less complete beginner at trying to do this on a Mac (have used a PC in the past with no problems, but with a different set of tools).

Thanks,

Bowjest

DJ,

Thanks for your response. As requested, the RTSP link for the data I am trying to capture:

rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/radio4fmcoyopa/radio_4_fm_-_saturday_1430.ra?timestamp=1243696869&pid=b00kmgxw&BBC-UID=b49af2020c89a675431e098941eb93725625d970a070f25152d860a4835cb0f8&SSO2-UID=

Any advice you or anyone else can give would be greatly appreciated.

It seems we have no packetizer for Real formats yet, so it's not possible to store a stream yet.

Hi, Kazim,

I downloaded something called Soundflower for Mac OSX and then used that as my sound driver and recorded the stream as it played via Audacity.

I hope that helps.

This stream, and others like it, plays consistently using Real Player. I can record it using Audacity with Sound Flower. I get the same problem from any of the streams on this page: http://www.iplayerconverter.co.uk/r/7/aod/default.aspx

The streams expire after 7 days. For testing, try any stream from a current page.
