1080p and black borders issue!

Need some advise on 720p and 1080p mkv files

is they're any point watching films 1080p? or it's better to have them in 720p?

both resolution are different but only will show effect if you have the right screen size right?
but the frames do sometimes jump in 1080p but not in 720p

i have Apple iMac 2.66GHz SuperDrive Desktop Computer with 20' (Graphics card ATI Radeon HD 2600)

but i just wanted to know is they're anyway you get get rid of the black borders when watching these mkv files on a computer or not?

do you have to adjust the settings on VLC player ( version i use 0.8.6i which is the best so far than the newer versions!)

sorry i'm all new to things tech stuff!

It depends on your screen resolution. If your monitor's resolution is <=1280 in width (since a 16:9 720p video is 1280x720) then, assuming perfect scaling, no. If the width is >1280 then yes, although might not make a notable/noticeable difference. What is your screen resolution?

If you mean by black bars the bars at the top/bottom of the video when in fullscreen, then that is probably since your monitor has a different aspect ratio (shape) to the video. You can change the aspect ratio to match that of your screen, however that will distort the video too.

This can be done when playing the video by going to "Video >> Aspect-ratio >> 16:10". Where 16:10 is your desired aspect-ratio (16:10 might work though ).

yeh my Screen resolution 1680 x 1050

i think i stick to 720p than 1080p, it's too wide you just get half of the screen

1680x1050 is 1.6:1. You can create custom aspect ratios in the Preferences. Go to the preferences, select Advanced options/"All" for "Show settings", and then go to:
Video

Enter e.g. "1.6:1" for the "Custom aspect ratios list". Press "Save" and try a video. That aspect ratio should then be selectable from the Aspect-ratio menu.

The snapshot is 16:9 (1280x720), however the actual video is 1280x534 which is... 2.397:1, which is 2.40:1 (a standard video aspect ratio). BTW you can get that by just doing WIDTH/HEIGHT in a calculator.
