Yes.
Preferences->All

Then choose in the left column: Input/Codecs -> Access modules -> MMap

Now deselect; "Use file memory mapping" and Save.
This will be fixed in 0.9.5 and later.
I don't see this at all in 0.9.4. There isn't a MMap. Where do you deselect "Use file memory mapping"?

This fix didn't change the occasional video stutter at all for me. Still having problems.
SD and HD content, core2duo.
"this"......
Please specify what you are talking about.
sorry sir dj, i was referring to the mmap fix you specified. even with the mmap setting changed files still stutter.

Yes. Extremely choppy. I am using 0.8.6f on a G5 desktop running OSX 10.5.5 (not an intel processor) and quality of video and sound is excellent on 60% of AVI content. With the rest, I get the error "access_file: seeking too far" and depending on the content, it either stops playing or the player quits altogether. I upgraded to 0.9.4 and all of my content works just fine, so where I had originally though it was the content and I had spent a considerable amount of time re-building content and exporting in another format (MOV), the new version of the player, proved that it was not the content, but the player. Unfortunately, I would rather jab pencils in my eyes then view the content in 0.9.4, not only is the playback choppy, but while it's playing, you don't have the fluid control as in 0.8.6f. I hope a fix is coming as I would rather view and/or produce videos in AVI format. Thanks.

Just tried 0.9.5 on my aluminium iMac running 10.5.5. It's worse than 0.9.4 on the HD movie I tried to watch.

I just gave up and went back to 0.8.6i. I'll check again in a few months to see if things have stabilised.

Hi all,

I've noted that disabling the Skip Frames option in the Video preference drastically improves my video quality, particularly with .avi and .mkv files. This may obviously affect performance of higher-quality media, but clearly points to the (new?) frame skipping algorithms as the culrpit...

Anyone else care to give their input?

Yesterday, I tried the 0.95 version.
Playback is not acceptable on my G5 Dual 2Ghz CPU. Plenty of RAM.

If move the mouse, or click somwhere, or open the prefs dialog, playback ist choppy. If I select the timeshift option, playback is choppy, even If I do nothing.
Stream is a live MPEG2-TS from Satellite, average Framerate 3Mbit/s, ranging fom 1.5 to 5Mbit/s, received via multicast from the STB.
Might be still usable for News-broadcasts, but not for watching a real movie.

with 8.6.i, I can do other work, while still watching the video scaled to a factor of 2 on the second screen.

(btw.: playing a 1920x1080 MKV file on a PowerPC is impossible with any version of VLC, about 0.15fps, but that might be related to the Video Card)

Playback on my macbook has been shocking ever since 0.9.2. It always stutters on the .avi which is the main format i use. This is a great shame and know it is not the only issue in the new version. I hope you sort this soon

0.9.6 is still horribly worse than anything pre 0.9.2. It pisses me off, I have to say, quite frankly. I dig the new features, but when it f***s up the sublime key feature playback, I can't see the point of it.

I do confirm that playback issues discussed here are still present for 0.9.6 as far as I've tested it on my macs (PB G4, PowerMAC dual G5, MacBookPRO)

Same problem here. Every couple of minutes video stops while sounds continues for up to 10 seconds before continuing. I have notice that it recovers if i increase the playing speed for a moment. This happens on a Macbook Pro, Mac OSX 10.5.5 with core two duo 2Ghz and 2Gb ram. I know that developers are not getting paid to work on this but it will be great if it is resolved sooner as VLC has always been the best player on all platforms and the Mac version should not lag behind the rest.

Hi!
I just want to add myself to the list here. Ever since upgrading to 0.9.2 all my videos stop every few minutes for up to 10 seconds. The sound continues and when the picture finally unfreezes it's completely garbled for a few moments. I now use 0.9.6 and no change. I use a santa rosa macbook pro with 4GB RAM. VLC has been my ONLY player of choice for many years now, I hope this will be fixed!
Apart from this bug, VLC has always delivered flawlessly. Keep up the good work :)

Hi all,
I had exactly the same problem of choppy playback with 0.9.6. However setting "Input / Codecs" -> "Access modules" -> "File" -> "Caching value in ms" to 2000 got rid of the issue. You may want to give it a try.

I had little success with H264 files; other players had crisp, colorful images, but VLC showed disturbing choppiness. I was even tempted to convert these files to .MOV format, which has worked with me before. As noted by others, this problem emerged after 0.8.6. Bringing caching values to 2000ms seemed to have little effect; I increased cache to as high as 6000ms - still jerky. Translating the files into XVID or MOVIE files makes them considerably smoother.

The issue may simply be that there's insufficient RAM on my iMac.

I've just registered solely to add a MeToo to this thread.

In the past I've sworn by VLC for just about every OS known to man, but the 0.9.X version on the Mac is absolutely appalling. Standard definition DIVX and XVID files repeatedly stutter, hang and then jerk back into life with a burst of screen corruption. And, sorry, cocking around with the cache settings is not an appropriate solution - it is not unreasonable to expect something to work in 0.9.X out of the box that worked well in 0.8.X (and it can't get much more basic for a media player than playing a low res DIVX format avi!)

My Macbook has 2Gb memory, and a core duo 2.1 process, so while it's not exactly Skynet out of Terminator, it's more than good enough.

After finally getting fed up with watching my programmes break up, after a month or so of running 0.9.x I tracked down a .dmg of 0.8.6i and downgraded. It was like getting an old friend back. Clearly there is something fundamentally wrong with the 0.9 Mac code, and it's far more than just struggling a bit with really high-res HD content. I will not be upgrading again until I have clear reason to do so, 0.8.6i does everything I need and does it well. You guys on the development team should consider reverting, because there's something not right with the 0.9.x branch on the Mac.

Just to update: Tried the 0.9.8 version yesterday, still freezing and skipping every 10 minutes or so on any video file. Went back to 0.8.6 now and no problems whatsoever. MacBook pro santa rosa 4 GB RAM.
