Video Thumbnails?

I'm currently using VLC to display various video loops in a live setting and at the moment the way it works is that VLC has a list of the filenames and there is a separate thumbnail view which we use to choose the video (HTML - safari). This inevitably leads to lots of awkward crossreferencing between the two - searching for filenames etc.

Is there a way to get VLC to display a playlist as thumbnails rather than filenames?

I am just having the same problem (want video thumbnails in playlist view) but but 5 years later, there still seems no answer? WTF?
