Crash on transcoding large mpg to mp4

[bungle]

I have some mpg files pulled off my Tivo HD. VLC will play them fine, however I am trying to transode them so I can get them into iTunes and thus my iPhone. The shorter shows (30 mins) transcode to .mp4 perfectly. But the longer shows (the one associated with the crash log below is 60 mins long/1.62GB) cause VLC to crash with report as follows...

VLC seems to be using a standard amount of memory, I see no spikes in activity monitor before it crashes. I have tried deleting preferences and unenabling everything I can think of to no avail.....I would love any help to get this to work. Machine is a MBP Core Duo 2.0/2GB/plenty of disk space.

Actually the files won't play in Quicktime having bought the QT plugin. They will load but no picture. I suspect they have some kind of format issue. VLC is the only thing that will play them fine.

Ironically, the solution to this whole transcoding problem, is to use VisualHub as the frontend and force it (in Advanced settings) to decode using (wait for it....) VLC

Then it transcodes fine. Shame VLC can't do the same on its own

Ironically, the solution to this whole transcoding problem, is to use VisualHub as the frontend and force it (in Advanced settings) to decode using (wait for it....) VLC

Then it transcodes fine. Shame VLC can't do the same on its own

Oooops, spoke to soon that creates a viewable file with perfect audio and video, but crashes out after 11 minutes or so.

So to recap....

On OSX

iSquint - generates mp4 with perfect picture but garbled audio
VLC by itself (both 0.8.6c and d) - plays mpeg2 file fine but if transcoding then crashes with no usable partial file after about 10 mins
Quicktime with QTMPEG2 plugin ($$) - loads file but no picture
MPEGStreamclip - can't do anything with it (well if QT plugin can't then natch)
VisualHub ($$) using own engines - generates mp4 with perfect picture but garbled audio
VisualHub ($$) forced to use VLC to decode - generates perfect mp4, but crashes out some way into file.

Its all a huge PITA, off to try VLC on Linux and windows. It has to be something to do with the MPEG2 file being incorrect, but VLC will play it fine. If only the QT plugin that i spent money on would do what it should.
