VLC media player 0.8.6d prerelease

Hello folks,

we are currently working on a bugfix release, which mostly targets specific issues on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, but also includes some updates for users on Mac OS X 10.4. Right now, our builds do not run on Mac OS 10.3.9, but we're willing to restore this functionality for our final release.

We need your feedback. Please download a suitable build for your Mac platform and tell us about blocking bugs you might discover. If nothing too bad happens, this release should be finished by the end of the working week.

Here is the current list of changes for the Mac OS X platform:
* Apple Remote support on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard with enhanced functionality
* Improved Video Output compatibility for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
* Improved behaviour of the Fullscreen Controller and mode changes between Fullscreen and windowed video output
* Softened the white flash artefacts that may appear during the transition between two differents movies
* Support for current Ogg file formats

This release will also include these generic bugfixes:
* Improved recovery on unexpected stream discontinuities
* Fix invalid free in bookmarks loading code
* Use field order (top/bottom) for correct bob/linear deinterlacing

hello... i use the intel version and works very fine for what i see!! the new fullscreen function work very fine!
But why i don't seeking the mkv files when there is incomplete.... and why i can do it for the others media files (avi, mpeg, ecc.) whit the p2p software??? Aniway thanks it's amazing.

@sdodd: how did you encounter this issue? Switching from fullscreen to windowed-mode or by resizing the window? Are you on a PowerPC or Intel-based Mac?

@Paragonidae: Regrettably, that's the way these controls are implemented in the 0.8.6 series. However, I consider to change this for 0.9.0.

@Roland21: That's due to the way Matroska files are structured. While incomplete AVIs etc. can easily be re-indexed, this isn't possible with MKVs. There is no way for us to implement this.

I *had* the video redraw error, but not anymore. I made a previous post about the issue. Everything works fine. I can maximize and resize my windows and nothing gets cropped out. I tested with multiple videos at different resolutions and it is all good.

I really like the way it "fades" into fullscreen now, its alot cleaner.

Oh, I am running an upgraded Leopard system, 10.51. Let me know if you need anything else.

I still have problems playing specific flash-movies. I could e-mail a sample if required.

Furthermore I have one mpeg-file that doesn't work with vlc. It's strange but it only affects this one file so it might an issue of this video. However, it plays in mplayer.

Here are the issue I found when using VLC 0.8.6d. I deleted the older VLC prefs before installing this version. All files are played locally on the HD.

1) When playing a video file then an audio file in a playlist, the video window will stay open and not reflect the current file being played in VLC.

2) Skipping the the next file when Random is enabled, doesn't seem to work.

3) Hitting "+" creates an empty folder in the playlist.

4) Controls in full screen mode do not appear when skipping to the next video track. Happen when playing .avi's and .wmvs

I discovered this in 0.8.6c after upgrading to Leopard and it's reproducible in 0.8.6d: If I switch to another space and then back to the one containing VLC, the keyboard controls do not function. I must click on the playing video to make them work again.

@ tonust: VLC 0.8.6c crashed at your site. Please download the Intel version of our 0.8.6d prerelease compilation and try to crash it again. We worked on that method and it should be save now. If it isn't, provide a fresh crash-log please.

@ earthsaver: That's a good point. I can't promise to fix this in time for 0.8.6d, but it's definitely a case I forgot to test. I'll have a look at it.

2) Sorry, I can't reproduce this. Works nicely for me both with MP3s and movies. Are you in windowed- or fullscreen-mode when this problem occurs? How do you trigger the skipping? Hot keys, buttons (which one?)?
3) That's the correct functionality of this button. It's only point is creating folders, which may be used for categorisation of one's playlist. VLC 0.9.0 adds a dialogue asking for the name of that folder. Regrettably, this panel cannot be back-ported to the 0.8.6 series.
4) Sorry, but I can't reproduce this either. Tried with multiple files of different sizes, but no "luck". I remember this being a problem in previous releases, but not in that one. I'll pass this info on anyway.

I am in windowed mode using the hot key (command arrow) to skip to the next file. I drag and drop the files into the playlist window in no particular order. It happens in fullscreen for me as well. The screen stays black and I am not able to exit after going from video to audio.

I hope this issue isn't specific to just my machine--I wouldn't want to waste your time 8-X

I love it. I can finally use my apple remote again (oh how I missed u lol). But I was wondering, the fade out into full screen is a bit annoying for me. Is it possible to turn it off or better, is it possible for future releases to have the same transition into full screen as quicktime pro? Problems with vlc 0.8.6d for Mac OS (Intel)

My machine config ->
Macbook Intel C2D 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (the latest release to Tiger...released last week by Apple)

1.
An addition to the equalizer issue.

Equalizer settings with audio files of format (i have tried only .mp3, that being the most popular) ".mp3" do not work.
Equalizer settings do work fine with all kinds of video format though (incl .wmv, .flv, .mp4).

2.
A .flv video file cannot be scrolled. As in yu cant fast forward through the video. The scrolling works fine with the other file formats though (.wmv and .mp4).

Consider the situation wherein you have a video file and a mp3 enqueued for playback in that order. Suppose you now play the video file first. After the completion of the video file, the player starts playing the song but throws an error saying that Equalizer settings' aren't permitted. Please see problem 1 which states that equalizer is supported for video formats but not for audio. Anyway, now after completion of video file, the audio file starts playing with an equalizer exception but the window that was playing the video is still on. Closing the video window leads to the current song also stopping. Bigger problems arise when the video is on full-screen mode. If the same problem is replicated on the full-screen mode then the screen blanks out and the song starts playing.

1. The equaliser works for me using mp3 files. Note that it only supports certain sample rates (mostly importantly 44,100 Hz), but not all of them. Especially 48,000 Hz are not supported.
2. This is a known issue with the 0.8.6 series, which cannot be solved easily due to internal architecture limitations. VLC 0.8.6d supports FlashVideo as good as its architecture can.
3. This is a known issue we're currently working on. It will be fixed for the final release of VLC 0.8.6d.
