Choppy playback over wireless network share

Postby petegas » 09 Jun 2007 20:17

I am trying to playback video files over a network share from a wireless machine to another wireless machine - when i look at the network useage it essentially it plays a chunk, then the video pauses while it grabs some more over the network, and so on. Network is wireless-G and the video is low bitrate so it should handle it.

I don't seem to have this problem streaming over a wired connection which makes me think it is a wireless specific issue, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction either in VLC settings or network settings to allow more precaching.

thanks

I was just having the same issue, but it was a plain MP3 file over a wired (100 Mbit) connection to an SMB share (a linux box right next to me). You can indeed increase the amount of audio buffered by going to Prefs->Input/Codecs->Access Modules->File and increasing the "Caching value." I changed mine from 300ms to 600ms and it solved my problem.

Hope that helps :)

Yep - easy fix. I had this issue when I was using wireless (now using gigabit lan).

To fix this, perform the following.

Load VLC
At the top of your screen, go to VLC, select Preferences
Check the ADVANCED Box
Drop down the INPUT / CODECS section
Drop down ACCESS MODULES
Select FILE
and change the "caching value in ms" to around 2000.

That will fix the problem!
