VLC closes immediately

I can't answer the question 'why?' because I just have no idea "why" but it works. With VLC 8.0, it just works perfectly well. Of course that's not as good as the lattest version but it works and that's the main thing.

I, too, suffered the same problem when I upgraded to QT 7.1.5 and having VLC 0.86a broken on my iBook with OS 10.3.9. I tried earlier versions I had archived and anything later than VLC 0.84a crashed on launch. So I recommend that version to download from the Videolan org archives. It works perfectly for me. The downside to reverting to the older versions is a security risk which was fixed in O.86a. I hope the developers can identify the conflict and fix it for the next release. For what it is worth the QT 7.1.5 also broke AVI videos that I use to view in Quicktime with the Perian codec installed. Now that doesn't work on my Intel iMac, but VLC 0.86a (Intel version) works with QT 7.1.5

Thanks to the person who posted the link for the previous version.

I was in shock to realise today that VLC just crashed when I opened it. I deleted it, everything to do with VLC all to no prevail.

But now all is well and seems to be working smoother than ever.

EDIT: I can't seem to work out how to make screencaps with this version as the newer VLC just had "snapshot" which was lovely.

Anyone wanna try and report back? I have movie files that can't be played properly on vlc 0.8. I get sound but no video, they played ok on vlc0.8.6a

Try VLC 0.8.4a to see if that works before you try to tinker with uninstalling QT. You can download it here http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... 4a/macosx/

I had the same problem as you all, going on two days trying to figure out how to fix the problem, I had to go back to an old version: vlc-0.8.2, after I installed this version again, BINGO it worked. TRY IT

Different older versions are available here. Find the newest one that works for you.. 0.8.2 did the trick for me

I hope this issue is fixed soon as I'm running 1.4.6 on an intel processor (haven't updated to 1.4.9 yet, but did update iTunes), and VLC 0.8.4a (which seems to work) isn't available for intels which means I have to run emulated. Watching movies emulated isn't too fast...

Maybe I should just re-install MacOS and just leave everything be as default. Just re-installed anyway.

Had the same problem after upgrading to 10.4.9 and itunes 7.11.1...read the previous posts and changed to 0.8.4a and now things worked perfectly as before!

Running a good solid Mac 10.3.9 on a PPC G5. Hadn't used VLC (0.8.5) in a while, and was surprised when I went to play a video file the other day and VLC would close the second it opened with no warning, alert, or anything else. Tried all the usual "fixes" to no avail. Saw there was a new version (0.8.6a) and downloaded that, and it did the exact same thing.

Took me a bit of searching to finally find this helpful thread on the topic, at least letting me know I wasn't alone with this sudden problem. Like others have mentioned, the only thing that comes to mind, is that I too, updated to the latest versions of iTunes and QuickTime, as I almost always do when new updates are available. Sounds to me like SOMETHING in VLC 0.8.6a is not working correctly with either the latest iTunes, QuickTime, or both.

Sure hope the the VLC experts can get this fixed for us loyal VLC users ASAP, but in the meantime, thanks for the tip on reverting back to earlier versions, as 0.8.4 at least will work!

I can't see in this thread if anyone else included the message generated in their console log when VLC crashes:

Error locating symbol - dlcompat: Symbol "_JVTDecoOpen" not found

Googling this message turns up a similar problem with TurboTax, for which they released a patch.

With any luck, this is enough info to help the VLC team figure it out.

I am begining to think its a problem with quicktime 7.1.5, and not vlc at all (this is only on os 10.3.9)

So you can downgrade Quicktime if you want and still use the latest vlc.

Downgrading is a bit tricky but doable here are some good instructions,

I had heard of Pacifist before but I didn't know how to use it so thanks for the link to the guide.

Quicktime is now downgraded to 7.1.3 and VLC 0.8.6 is working just fine now.

it's worth it becuase vlc plays a lot more different media types than quicktime. it also has a better user interface and there is a playlist type controller panel thingy.

looks like quicktime is trying to sabotaged the vlc project. jealous bastards.

I had the same problem with vlc0.8.6b closing when I tried opening a VIDEO_TS directory on a G4 powerbook 10.4.9. In VLC I went to 'Preferences' 'Video' 'Output Module', make sure 'Advanced' box is checked, and I changed from 'Default' to 'Quartz video', and then everything worked hunky-dory.

Update:

Just upgraded to QuickTime 7.1.6 and now VLC 0.8.6b opens and plays WITHOUT having to have VLC in the Master Exclude list of Unsanity's Application Enhancer 2.0.3.

Still having the VERY annoying problem – as MANY others seem to be as well – of VLC crashing upon closing/quitting – sometimes it takes several seconds before the crash dialog box comes up, so I don't know if it's REALLY crashing or what?!

I'm running an otherwise good, solid, Mac OS 10.3.9.
