Which version for region-free playback (OS 10.4.5)?

When I first bought my Mac Mini one year ago, I could play all DVDs. However, after software upgrades from Apple, VLC was no longer region-free.

Now, I have reinstalled the original OS (10.4.5) and QT (7.0.4), but using the current version (0.8.6a) of VLC, it is still not region-free. The only software I have updated is iTunes. Which version of VLC can I use to regain region-free playback?
