VOD with avi-files

Can anybody tell me how i can offer avi files on my lan?
if i configure an mpg all works good. I can hear the sound and see the image. But when i trie to share an avi then i can only received the sound.
i have tried to use the mp2t and the mp2p mux but i will not help.
have annyone some experience with offering avis as video on demand?
