can I use subtitles???

I would like to add subtitles to my video. it's a .sub and I gave it the same name that my video. with others programm it operate like that, but here it do not see otpion to play subtitles...
the preference menu is short for me. is it normal? especialy concerning options you are speaing about in this forum.
help me please!!!
