The video streams becomes choppy just after a few hours

Postby tonykwang » 21 Sep 2006 08:26

The multicast channels on VLC will need to be restarted because the video stream becomes choppy just after a few hours of playing time.

The VLC is running on a very powerful machine (Xeon duo 3GHz CPU, with 4GB RAM).

The VLM scripts as below:
new ta_141 broadcast enabled

setup ta_141 input "d:/vlc/nod/aaa.ts"

setup ta_141 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=224.0.0.3:1234,sap,name="ta_141"}}

new ta_sched141 schedule enabled

setup ta_sched141 date 2006/08/21-12:19:19 period 0000/00/00-00:00:54

setup ta_sched141 append control ta_141 play

new ta_142 broadcast enabled

setup ta_142 input "d:/vlc/nod/aaa.ts"

setup ta_142 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=224.0.0.4:1234,sap,name="ta_142"}}

new ta_sched142 schedule enabled

setup ta_sched142 date 2006/08/21-12:19:29 period 0000/00/00-00:00:54

setup ta_sched142 append control ta_142 play

new ta_143 broadcast enabled

setup ta_143 input "d:/vlc/nod/aaa.ts"

setup ta_143 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=224.0.0.5:1234,sap,name="ta_143"}}

new ta_sched143 schedule enabled

setup ta_sched143 date 2006/08/21-12:19:39 period 0000/00/00-00:00:54

setup ta_sched143 append control ta_143 play

new ta_139 broadcast enabled

setup ta_139 input "d:/vlc/nod/aaa.ts"

setup ta_139 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=224.0.0.1:1234,sap,name="ta_139"}}

new ta_sched139 schedule enabled

setup ta_sched139 date 2006/08/21-12:18:59 period 0000/00/00-00:00:54

setup ta_sched139 append control ta_139 play

new ta_140 broadcast enabled

setup ta_140 input "d:/vlc/nod/aaa.ts"

setup ta_140 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=224.0.0.2:1234,sap,name="ta_140"}}

new ta_sched140 schedule enabled

setup ta_sched140 date 2006/08/21-12:19:09 period 0000/00/00-00:00:54

setup ta_sched140 append control ta_140 play

But below scripts are running well even after 24 hours of playing time:
new ch1 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch1 input "D:/clips/epg/harbour"
setup ch1 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.1:1234}}
control ch1 play

new ch2 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch2 input "D:/clips/epg/mood"
setup ch2 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.2:1234}}
control ch2 play

new ch3 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch3 input "D:/clips/epg/fitness-264"
setup ch3 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.3:1234}}
control ch3 play

new ch13 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch13 input "D:/clips/epg/fitness-264"
setup ch13 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.13:1234}}
control ch13 play

new ch6 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch6 input "D:/clips/bitband/H264_Bitband.mpg"
setup ch6 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.6:1234}}
control ch6 play

new ch7 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch7 input "D:/clips/bitband/H264_Envivio.mpg"
setup ch7 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.7:1234}}
control ch7 play

new ch8 broadcast enabled loop
setup ch8 input "D:/clips/bitband/h264.ts"
setup ch8 output #duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=234.2.3.8:1234}}
control ch8 play
All of the using clips are encoded as H.264

Could you monitor your memory consumption of VLC ?

The total memory consumption is not high, it haven't exceed 2G(50%).
And the CPU consumption is not more than 60%.

The question is more : is the memory consumption increasing , like a memleak spotted ?

If not, I don't know.

I am not very competent in this affair, but it seems for me that there is a (or more) memleak(s) in VLC/VLM.

What you can do :
- restart VLC every few hours
- try a nightly build of vlc or a trunk based vlc.
- try to spot where it memleaks.

Any other idea ?

A trunk based VLC has to be compiled by yourself !!! A lot of fun ahead.

Nightlies are compiled every night. They are highly unstable but they can fix a lot of problems. you can find them Here
