Can VLC be used for a performance

Let me be clear about what I want to do. I am interested in finding out if I can use VLC to display the goom visuals as well as home made visuals. What I am trying to figure out is whether or not I can use VLC as a live video jockey (vj) to display visuals along side a dj for live performances.
Can someone please help me with a clear answer and then direct me to the area in the manual or forum to get me started in this. I haven't been able to find anything on this subject so far.

Many thanks.

Yes, you can but VLC is very limited so far on the visualisations.

j-b, Thanks for your reply. I was planning on using my own visualizations. I didn't realize VLC had its own. Anyone out there use VLC for live video mixing? If so, can you give me some guidance.
Thanks.

VLC might not be the best for live video mixing though...
