Hi,

When you search in the forum with a string like "play with vlc" the result will show all results which have "play", "with" and "vlc".
If you want to search the string "play with vlc" you must go on google search this :
"play with vlc" inurl:forum.videolan
Then you've got the results.

Doesn'it sound weird to have google giving better search results than the search engine of the forum itself ? What about changing this ?

Yes - phpBB only does keyword matching. If you go to the Advanced search there is a description of the wildcards which can be used for more specific search queries.

That isn't unreasonable considering Google is the world's largest search engine. As far as I know there are no phpBB mods which allow for searching for a complete string.
