Is "vlc streamer" legit or malware?

Postby aurelianro » 26 Jan 2020 14:17

After downloading vlc from get.videolan.org I saw below an link for vlc streamer, a plugin or program that lets you play torrent movies in vlc without downloading them.
I can not find any info about this program here or on google and the link its not on the videolan download page anymore, now I realize it must have been an ad that was made to look like it wad part of the videolan website.
Should I uninstall it and scan for malware or its a legit thing?

The third party app best known as VLC Streamer runs on iOS only so I don't know what you're even referring to.

I had the same issue as aurelianro. I wanted to install the VLC player on a computer so I visited the videolan website, but when I went to the download screen, I accidently clicked an ad in the center of the screen.
In the ad, it said: "VLC Torrent Streamer: Watch Torrent directly from VLC. Support for Magnet Link. Fast, Secure and easy to use".
I was in a hurry so I just went with it. Problem is, something was installed and I don't know what or where it was installed, so now I'm worried it was malware....
Can anyone provide some info on this? I can still see the ad so if I need to provide a screenshot, I can do that.

Edit: Also to add to this, You can find the same file that I downloaded if you go to vlcstreamer.com

That's NOT legit.

They keep targeting download pages ads.
That's mice & cat game since google does not permit to filter proactively ads, but only when it's too late
