I must admit I prefer the suggestion by tonydelalande. It looks really slick. The one posted by J-B I feel lacks a little polish and feels more of a rearrangement of the current interface, than a rethink. One thing I might suggest is the ability to move the control bar, since I feel the progress bar feels better at the bottom, but that is probably a matter of preference, since iTunes does also have it at the top.
If there is any way to make the new Interface in Interface Builder and then hook into VLC, then I reckon that would be cool. I feel the advantage of that approach is that you would be able to leverage the strengths of MacOS UI designers and leave the functional work to the VLC team. Think of this as the relationship between Adium and Libpurple. Maybe we could have someone create a video display widget that would help here?
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information
