0.9.x documentation

Postby tony.c » 25 Nov 2008 03:07

The documentation at http://www.videolan.org/doc/ is labeled as outdated along with instructions to use the wiki. Unfortunately the documentation at http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Documentation is labeled outdated as well.

Can some one point me to correct documentation, or tell me which of the two is the least outdated? I am trying to setup a streaming server using 0.9.6.

Thanks,
Tony

Both of the are outdated... :)
Streaming Howto should be a bit better.

my intent is to build a htpc server to stream content from local files, web, and a BDA capture device via http. i anticipate spending a few months in the process. in your opinion, should i delay any further efforts until one of them is brought up to date, or is it close enough to get started.

BTW, while I have been unable to get VLC to recognize the ATSC capabilities of my tuner, watching analog tv with VLC generates far less cpu load than all of the other applications I have tested. kudos.

It is a Hauppage HVR-950 usb stick that supports ota ATSC and analog. I'm hoping it will pick up QAM-256 with the right software, but that feature is not mentioned anywhere in the packaging.

QAM_256 has just been added in VLC for the 1.0, at least on linux.

After testing and researching several distributions of MythTv and other Linux based htpc solutions, I finally came to the realization that support for tv tuners in Linux is, and will continue to be, a problem. There are very few models with built-in support, and I had no success compiling drivers from other sources. So my I've changed my plans tu use a WinXP backend and stream to linux/mozilla clients. This approach seems to resolve all of the hardware compatibility issues and allows me to move forward.

On the subject of documentation, the streaming guide states that the mozilla plugins can be found here: "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\mozilla". That directory was not created with the install of 0.9.6. Can you provide the names of the two missing files?
