Redesign the forum icon (i-cone)

Postby funman » 29 Nov 2007 02:16

Hello,

I tried to modify styles/prosilver/imageset/forum-cone.png with gimp, to make it fit better with the blue background:

http://people.videolan.org/~funman/img/ ... e-blue.png

However it would be better if the cone and bubbles keep their original white color, so if anyone feels like an artist .. ;)

The best thing to do would be convert the white surrounding it to an alpha channel - only trouble is the white strips are done also if you just change the white to alpha. CloudStalker managed to do though it in Paint.NET (see here).

bad me, cloudstalker already did it and i had not seen :)

i think this is because i only read technical discussions... there is too much posts on the forum

this is what i did with gimp, converting a color to an alpha channel

however, since the bubbles and cone have a different color than pure white, i'm not sure why it gets transformed too :/

Maybe there is another channel for luminance ?

If you use the "Fuzzy Select Tool" in GIMP then you can select contiguous regions of colour. It doesn't give a perfect background removal, however it is pretty good. I had to manually draw a line for the top-left edge of the white ring on the cone to stop that being selected too (since it is white also), but this is the quick result I got (with a minor touchup - could be cleaned up more around the edges though):

I still think CloudStalker's result was better.

Cheers, Arite.

Transparent PNG:

Prerendered on background:

Photoshop calculated the edges and removed most of the white, removed the rest manually with a smooth brush so that it does not look to "pixely" on the colored background.

What exactly is the complication? I've already made a download link for the alpha transparent PNG icon, can it not be applied?

CloudStalker's was quite good, but it is to big and has too much white pixels on the edge, does not blend well in the background.

Very nice to fit the background, but.. Format of your file is PNG and 32-bit colors are used. Forum picture is GIF and it's maximum 256 colors. So you'll have to convert your image to 256 colors too, otherwise I see it as following.

See the borders? :)

Also using Firefox 2.0, works fine. It could be a scaling problem since bg_header.gif is 92px high, and the image is stretched vertically ~1.5 times, or, as you said, a problem with the colours.

Intetesting - just tried it in "Windows" Internet Explorer 7 - same issue. Not surprising, since IE is full of web standard incompatibilities etc. (even though it is still the most common browser). IE seems to blend the *.gif background when zoomed in (using the only interesting feature in IE - zoom tool), but not the *.png cone.

There are two ways to solve the issue - either change browsers, or convert the forum icon to have an alpha channel.

Cheers, Arite.

Hmm, that's strange, I don't get that at all. On mine it seems to blend perfectly with the background.

Well, no, IE7 doesn't show it right... And guess what, I don't care.

Why ? Because IE is a broken browser.

And about alpha channel... IE doesn't support it right.

Sorry to agree here but IE5-7 is the reason that I switched to Firefox, which is now much better and faster then it used to be, if you have the prebeta version. :)
